First, title was taken from this: "The mind can weave itself warmly in the cocoon of its own thoughts, and dwell a hermit anywhere." ~ James Russell Lowell

Second, the idea came from these pictures i've seen a bunch of times over the past few years, of trees that had been cocooned in spider webs after flooding had driven all sorts of insects into them. If you haven't see them yet you can head over here: [link]

I'd thought about using some of my fake spider webs, but logistically it would have been a nightmare, so i went with my beloved plastic instead.

The color version is awesome, but for some reason the black and white one speaks to me more. Plus it makes what's going on inside the "cocoon" look way more bizarre and awesome.

Model is the wonderful Tatiana.

I know, i know, i already posted these. I had to re-edit them though, and this set more closely resembles what they look like in person. You can see my other post [here] for more info on these.

Finally finished the mixed media diptych i've been working on slowly for the past month or so.
These are two separate 13x19 prints, with white tissue paper, white thread and a needle. And of course some rips and tears. I'll try and post the up close shot in the comments, but otherwise you can view it [here]

Title from William Cowper [Book III, The Garden.]

[I think the biggest issue i'm going to have working on mixed media stuff is it's a pain in the butt to photograph them "right". Because of the tissue paper, these were either as they look in person, only with less detail, or darker than in person, like this.]

Prints will be up in the shop soon, but the originals are going to stay with me for a little while.

Oh, and i'm setting up a mailing list for those who want to be able to keep up with print sales, giveaways, contests, auctions, new prints, etc. email me updates @ caryndrexl.com if you're interested in signing up for it.

mail art exchange, originally uploaded by caryndrexl.

Via Flickr:
If any artists out there would like to exchange small mail art with me, let me know! I'll be sending out small mixed media pieces, mostly based around my photos, but i'll probably do some with the public domain images i've worked with too. In return i'd like to receive drawings, paintings, screen prints, or mixed media pieces. I'm NOT really interested in prints, sorry. I'm sending out small original pieces, not straight reproductions, so i'd like to receive the same in return. Plus 99% of the art i have in the house are photos already. I also will be saying no to some people, sorry! I can't do an exchange with everyone who asks, it's just not possible. So if you could give me some idea of what you do and/or might send, i'd appreciate it. But if i might make posts here and there where people can send me their addresses and i'll pick a few to send some random pieces out to.
EMAIL ME if interested. caryn @ caryndrexl.com

I'm working on a test for a mixed media piece i want to do, and this is the beginning stages of it. So this is a photo of the actual print pieces i'm working with, though i also made it black and white and edited it a little bit. I kinda of like it just as is, hence taking a pic of it, so that i can offer it as a print. But for what i'm actually doing, there is way more to go.
also:
1. i wrote a blog post about 3 photographers i've known online for a while, who have influenced my work over the years. You can read that [here]
2. I have an instagram now. [linky linky]
